Commish's Corner Volume III: The BCS

The BCS, how much longer will the suffering go on?

Through the course of my "entertainment life", I have been blessed to see a few things that were on my "In my Lifetime" checklist. They include..

*LSU winning a National Championship in football (I attended the 2003 game).

*The Saints making the playoffs (finally, geez).

*The ability to play vs other on consule game systems.

Now, one of the last things and certainly one of the most important - will we ever see a playoff for NCAA Division I Football?

I think so. The money is there as the NCAA Basketball Tourney is a huge cash cow. I would much rather see teams decide it on the field, than see who some S.I.D. or Johnny Presspass think should be playing for a championship.

This season is no different than others. Oklahoma has played great, but Texas beat them. The deciding factor on who made it out of those clubs was who was voted higher amongst an average of the human and computer polls. Crazy.

Meanwhile, other 1-loss teams such as USC and Penn State were not even a part of the conversation. Granted, I think the SEC is alot stronger than anyone and if they wanted to rematch BAMA & Florida, so be it. But I think others that are as close deserve a chance.

I believe 16 teams would be the best format. The reason? It allows you to put the best schools in - the SEC and BIG 12 may bring 2 or 3 teams in certain years, as could the BIG 10 or even the ACC (if it ever lived up to it's hype and this year they didn't deserve even a single team in). That way you can bring the best and still leave room for the teams that play in excessively weak conferences. The Utahs, BYUs, Boise & Ball States of the world could maybe take 1 or 2 spots. The BIG EAST champ usually isn't much better than that and would fit maybe just above that billing on a great year for them.

The BIG 10 and PAC 10 seem to be the major hold up among the NCAA Presidents that decide these matters. The harken to the love of the Rose Bowl and it's tradition. I am here to tell you that "tradition" isn't the same anymore. First off, Penn State is basically new to the formula compared to all the old teams that have been in the mix for years. The bowls themselves have become a joke as 64 teams TRY and qualify to reach 6-6 so that the games can be filled. The majority of the people watching the ignored bowls these days seem to be the gamblers.

I say, use those bowl games as playoff match ups. Rotate where your championship is played each year. It is so easy to ponder, yet we still wait.

Until next time...
